Regularly refresh content with updated data and insights. Add "Last Updated" timestamps. Fresh content ranks better.
Updating an existing article that already ranks is 5-10x faster than writing a new one from scratch. A content refresh on a page ranking position 8-15 can push it into the top 5 within weeks.
Go to GA4 > Reports > Engagement > Pages and screens. Add a filter for organic traffic. Sort by sessions descending. These pages drive most of your traffic and should be refreshed first. Also check Search Console for pages with declining impressions.
Read through each page looking for: statistics with old years ("In 2022..."), references to defunct tools or companies, broken external links (use Check My Links extension), and screenshots of outdated interfaces.
Replace old statistics with current ones. Add new sections covering recent developments. Expand thin sections with more detail. Check what competitors have added since you last updated — if they cover subtopics you don't, add them.
Display "Last Updated: [date]" prominently near the top of the article. This signals freshness to both users and search engines. In WordPress: add to your theme template or use a plugin like WP Last Modified Info.
After updating, go to Search Console, enter the page URL in the top bar, and click "Request Indexing". This prompts Google to re-crawl the page sooner. Also share the updated article on social media to drive fresh engagement signals.
