Structure content with definitions, numbered steps, tables, and bullet lists. Answer questions directly in the first 40-60 words.
The easiest featured snippets to win are ones you already rank in positions 2-5 for. Google often pulls snippets from these positions. In Search Console, filter by position 2-5 and high impressions to find your best opportunities.
In Search Console > Performance > Queries. Filter by position < 10. Sort by impressions. Check each keyword in Google — does a featured snippet currently appear? If yes, and you rank on page 1, you can potentially steal it.
Search each target keyword and note the snippet type: paragraph (definition/explanation), numbered list (how-to steps), bulleted list (list of items), or table (comparison data). Your content must match this format to win the snippet.
For paragraph snippets: write a 40-60 word direct answer right after the H2. For list snippets: use ordered/unordered lists with 5-8 concise items. For table snippets: create an HTML table with clear headers. Be more comprehensive than the current snippet holder.
The pattern Google looks for: [H2 Question] [Direct Answer in 40-60 words] [Supporting Detail]. Don't add preamble between the heading and the answer. The first sentence after the H2 should directly answer the question.
Search Console doesn't directly show featured snippets, but a sudden jump in CTR or position 0 for a keyword indicates you've won a snippet. Use Ahrefs > Organic Keywords > filter by "Featured snippet" to track which snippets you hold.
Optimize this content section for a featured snippet: Target query: "[SEARCH QUERY]" Current snippet holder (competitor): [URL or description] My current content: [PASTE RELEVANT SECTION] Rewrite to win the featured snippet: 1. Start with a direct, concise answer (40-60 words) immediately after the H2 2. If it's a "how-to" query: format as numbered steps 3. If it's a definition query: provide a crisp paragraph definition 4. If it's a comparison: create a comparison table 5. If it's a list: use a bulleted list with 5-8 items Keep the content factual, authoritative, and better structured than the current snippet holder.
