Find intent-driven, long-tail, and semantic keywords. Map each page to one primary keyword and a cluster of related terms.
Don't just chase volume. A keyword with 200 monthly searches and clear buying intent (e.g., "best CRM for small business") is worth more than a 10,000-volume informational keyword. Always multiply volume by business value.
Never target the same primary keyword on multiple pages. This causes keyword cannibalization where your pages compete against each other, and Google can't decide which to rank.
List 10-20 terms your customers would use to find you. Think about what problems you solve, not just what you sell. Ask your sales team what language customers use. Check your Google Business Profile insights for real search terms.
In Ahrefs: go to Keywords Explorer, enter your seeds, and explore "Matching terms", "Related terms", and "Questions". In Semrush: use Keyword Magic Tool. Free alternative: Google Keyword Planner (requires Google Ads account, no spend needed).
Search each keyword in Google and look at the results. Informational: blog posts, guides, wikis. Commercial: comparisons, reviews, "best of" lists. Transactional: product pages, pricing pages, signup forms. Match your content type to the intent.
Create a spreadsheet: Primary Keyword | URL (existing or "CREATE NEW") | Search Intent | Volume | Difficulty | Secondary Keywords (3-5). Each primary keyword should appear only once. If two pages target the same keyword, consolidate them.
This becomes your SEO roadmap. Include columns: Keyword, URL, Status (Published/Draft/Planned), Search Volume, Current Position, Target Position, Content Type, Last Updated. Review and update monthly.
